The Importance of Teaching Cleaning Skills to Students

Cleaning.  Most of us hate it.  For some of us it’s theraputic, and for some it might even be a job.  It’s a life skill that every individual should know how to do, whether its wiping off a table, vacuuming the floor, washing your clothes, or grooming yourself.  Here are some reasons why cleaning life skills are so important.

Independence

First and foremost, the skill of cleaning promotes independence.  Now everyone is a little different on their level of cleaning they do each day….or month…or year…. but no matter how much you hate to clean or how much it might seem like someone doesn’t clean up after themselves, its a necessity in order to live a healthy life.  There are extreme cases of of people not cleaning up after themselves because it’s become an obsession NOT to throw things away (like that TV show Hoarders), but the majority of people do clean up after themselves without even realizing it.  It’s a basic life skills, and the first step to becoming an independent adult.

Safety

Cleaning promotes safety.  How many times have you stepped on a Lego on the carpet and wanted to scream profanity?  Or would you leave food out on the counter for months on end?  Who knows what type of mold and bugs that would come of that.  Not only does it promote safety to live a cleaner life style, but it is also important to know the right tools and chemicals to use when cleaning.  It is important to know what precautions to take when using tools or chemicals (like wearing rubber gloves or goggles), or what liquid chemicals to use to clean household items (Window spray, bleach, polish…etc) versus liquids you use to groom (shampoo, mouth wash, tooth paste…etc).

Preservation

This comes close to safety in that you don’t want to use the wrong chemicals on the wrong thing.  For instance, if you use bleach on a dark colored shirt, your shirt isn’t going to be dark colored any longer.  Using the right chemicals will help to preserve your floor or furniture, keeping it clean as well.

Vocational

Some people get jobs that require cleaning skills (janitor, maid, many part time jobs in restaurants and stores…etc), so practicing these basic skills at home and school can be very beneficial for the future.

Even though cleaning is a basic life skill, there is so much to know when it comes to cleaning.  Help your child/student practice the different aspects of cleaning with these fun activities:

Product Reviews

from special educators

Theresa S.

This resource has been extremely beneficial. I teach students with moderate to severe disabilities who are on a certificate of completion for high school. This resource was helpful in establishing a routine for my students. Students remained engaged and enjoyed many of the activities. The consistency of the warm-ups allow for me to introduce students to working together appropriately and seeking help and support from peers not just teachers. The differentiated levels help save time and support students varying levels. Students remain engaged and it quickly hits on different life skills reviews.

I love everything about this resource. There are enough activities to last a year. The lectures and digital activities are my favorite with the real photographs. My students are learning and there seems to be enless materials in this bundle. I also love the creative CBI (community based instruction) ideas that go beyond the typical scavenger hunt.

Adulting Made Easy makes the absolute perfect resources for my Life Skills students who are about to graduate. Her resources teach practical skills that they will use in their lives and they don't view as being too immature for them (which is common in sped). Thank you so much for creating these resources!

As a teacher new to the role in vocational education, Adulting Made Easy's vocational products work great! It was an easy way for my students to understand various aspects of job searches and employment.   The vocational units saved me a ton of time by not having to create items on my own.

This was awesome to use with both my at-home learners and my in-person learners. I could use specific ones with our weekly theme during my vocational skills class. It was especially great at keeping my at-home kids engaged when I wasn't there to watch them.
