Spooky Deviled Eggs Cooking Lesson

Cooking activities are a wonderful way for students with disabilities to practice communication, motor skills, following directions, and teamwork—all while having fun! Spooky Deviled Eggs

  2. 🍳 Cook the eggs
  3. ❄️ Cool the eggs
  4. 🥚 Crack the shells with a fork
  5. 🎨 Color the eggs
  6. 🚿 Peel & rinse the eggs
  7. 🟢 Mix the filling in a ziploc bag
  8. 🎂 Pipe the filling
  9. 🍽️ Fill & garnish the eggs
  10. ✏️ Follow up your cooking lesson with recipe comprehension

🍳Hard Boiled Eggs

This step focuses on promoting student safety and independence.
In this recipe, I use an egg cooker rather than boiling eggs on the stovetop.
While you can certainly include stovetop boiling as part of your lesson, an egg cooker offers a safer, more accessible method for students who may struggle with fine motor control or handling hot water.

Using the egg cooker’s poker, make a small hole in the top of each egg.
Place the eggs in the cooker, fill the provided cup to the “hard-boiled” line, and pour the water in.
Cover the cooker, press Start, and once the timer sounds, transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice water using tongs.

🥚 Crack the shells

When the eggs are cool enough to touch, gently tap the shell with a fork to make small cracks all over.

🎨 Color the eggs

Fill a large bowl or container with enough water to completely cover the eggs. Add food coloring of your choice until the water becomes opaque (hard to see through). (Any color works great for this recipe!) Check out this dye-free plant-based food color.

Carefully place the eggs into the colored water using tongs, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for deeper color.

🚿 Peel & rinse the eggs


Carefully peel the shells off each egg so they don’t break. Then rinse the eggs gently with water.

🟢 Mix the filling

Carefully cut each egg in half. (I like to use these kid-friendly knives that don’t cut skin).

Scoop the egg yolks into a ziplock bag. Add 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, 1/2 teaspoon paprika, and a few drops of food coloring. (I used green, but any color looks awesome!) Check out this dye-free plant-based food color.
Seal the bag and have students squish and mix everything together — it’s a fun sensory activity! Keep mixing until the color looks even throughout the yolk mixture.

🍽️ Fill the eggs & serve!

Move all of the yolk mixture to one corner of the ziplock bag and tie the top if needed. Cut a small opening in the corner to create a simple piping bag. Carefully pipe the filling into the egg whites until each is full.


For a festive touch, drizzle a small amount of hot sauce on top to create a “bloody” Halloween effect. Your spooky deviled eggs are ready to be served! Be sure to keep refrigerated if you do not plan to eat right away.

Extend the cooking lesson with a comprehension activity to check for understanding and build additional skills such as reading a recipe, vocabulary, and sequencing. This resource includes differentiated, visual worksheets and a digital slides version that can be used for whole-group instruction or as visual support for students completing their worksheets.
